Yes, they work very well, and the more expensive units will even have radar detector detectors built in (police use radar detector detectors mostly in areas where detectors are illegal). Some will even alert to false alarms, the better ones filter out false signals.
The biggest problem is they tell you when they read the radar or laser signal, and sometimes that can be too late, especially with laser. With laser, usually once the detector tells you there's a signal, you've already been clocked. As a general rule, if you can see the police car when the detector goes off, you've probably already been clocked. The better models go off a good ways before you see the police car.
Many people who have detectors rely on them too heavily and eventually get caught speeding anyway.
If you want a very good detector, I'd recommend a Bel RX65, or Bel Sti expect to pay about $300 for the RX65 or $450 for the Sti.

yes they do. i have had mine for about 14 years and never been caught yet. just make sure it has vg2 and laser detection and 360 degree protection.
