It all depends what you consider a mosquito hawk... common names can be misleading. Option a) you are referring to a crane fly (tipulidae) which look like overgrown mosquito. it is a com on misconception that they are predatory, as adults they feed mainly off nectar, if they even eat at all. Larval stage of the crane fly is also non-predatory eating everything from decaying wood, plants, all the way to the status of pests in some area because the larvae can damage crops . http://bugguide.net/node/view/84535

Option b ) you are referring to a dragonfly in which case the are highly predatory and will eat a lot of insects, they commonly zoom around people catching whatever stinging insect is going after them, and I've seen more than a few mosquitos get chomped.

no...but i assune they do lol, maybe it was just a trick to make us think they do so we dont kill them
