Wash the towels in very hot water. Use 50% more detergent than usual, and add 2 cups of ammonia to the wash water. Ammonia is an excellent grease cutter, and it won't leave its odor on the towles (thought it does smell pretty bad right from the bottle.

I bleach all my towels, and never had a problem with odor or stains. Of course, if you can't bleach it, I agree with the vinegar methods.
And I agree with you...that smell IS disgusting!

There is something wrong, not with your towels, but with your nose. Or maybe it is psychosomatic and you feel, in your heart of hearts, that cooking oil is too bad a smell to be obliterated by ordinary laundary methods. I assure you this is not so. Just wash them in a 60 degree wash and all will be fine. Any odour that survives that should be reported to NASA and we all await the invasion.

a little baking soda with your detergent, or white vinegar...or you could use a half cup of bleach with some baking soda... all of it works great.
