Have you asked them???

Send them $100 a month. Even if you only pay $5 per month they have to take it.

Tell them to never call you again, you will only accept communication through the mail then hang up. You don't even have to give them your address if you don't want but they probably already have it. It’s the law: Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.

If they call again tape the conversation, log the date and time, never agree to anything just keep sending your monthly payments in a from that provides you a record like a check. If it becomes an issue sue them for harassing you.

My step son had a medical problem; we ended up owing money on 23 different medical bills, $8000 total. I had $200 a month to pay toward these bills. I paid the $5 to the 22 biggest and paid off the smallest, the next month I paid $5 on the 21 biggest and paid off the smallest. I did this for 5 months till I hit a bill that was too big to pay off with the remaining but you get the picture.

However the place that did the bone scans said they would only take $250 a month and they were the biggest bill at $3500. The lady was rude. I told her exactly what I was doing and that she would get $5 per month until every other bill that was less than hers was paid off. She didn't like it though. I said a judge would have no problem with my payment plan as a percentage of my monthly income. She shut up quickly, she had no choice and it was never turned over to collections and they did get paid off.

YES: They will accept $100.00 a month to pay the bill in full. I WOULD NOT PAY ANYTHING UNTIL THEY PUT IN WRITING, That they want $100.00 a month from me to pay this bill and there is no additional charges (interest - collection fees).

This step will permit your credit to be listed as "Paid according to agreement". The difference is your credit is listed as pass due otherwise. 150 point on your credit rating.

The collections world is cold and practical .
They want the $$$ now, not 4 years from now.
OK, they are not realistic because next to no one actually has $4K to pop for medical , but that is what they are hired to collect (and collection means you owed it for a long time already and did NOT pay)

You need to ask them. As long as you are paying on the account it shouldn't really matter. I recently looked into getting a house, and the mortgage lender said that medical bills don't really count towards this kind of thing. So just pay what you can. Call them up and settle something with them. I'm sure they'd be willing to work with you. Good luck!

If you have so little, just stop paying. Worry about putting food and a roof over your head.

People who have never been in your situation will not know how it feels.

By the way, there's no more debtor's prison and if the collection folks garnish your wages, they can only get roughly 20%.

They have to accept it...just keep sending them $100 a month ...they can not do anything (such.. as take you to court)...when making a payments every month it called something like ..a good faith payments...it shows you are not trying to get out of a paying off your debt...as long as you send them money every month .....

they can however worry you to death with phone calls...so each time they call..tell them this is all you can afford to pay at a time and if they threaten to take you to court (they will do this..to intimidate you ..its a bluff ..they will have no grounds for a lawsuit)....tell them to go ahead.."they can't get blood from a turnip"......

but be warned..you have to make some kind of payment every month....if you skip months they will have an excuse to take you to court.....

yeah I know where your coming from when you talk to them on the phone I am sure they say" no mam we can only accept 250 a month yada yada". In all reality if you only pay 5 a month there isnt much they can do to you. Just pay what you can when you can

Try this: mail a check for $100. If it's cash, they're accepting it. You're likely dealing with a hard nose commission-paid person who's trying to up the ante to their own personal benefit.

They have to accept it, your paying what you can. If you don't pay they will eventually garnish your wages, a certain percent. I would rather pay even $5 a month.

They will. It is their job to collect the money any way they can. They cannot refuse.
