All right, this came about from a question Top Ten Fighting ships. Naval buffs, I want to know what you think are the top 10 all time battleships, you may include battlecruisers. Will you have the battlecruiser Hood, or the gigantic Yamato in your list? What about the Seydlitz, or the gradfather of the dreadnaughts, Dreadnaught herself? The Bismarck, Bayern, Tegettoff, Richelieu, or even the Nevada in your list. Think in terms of fighting history, innovation, power and design.

The Yamato was definitely the largest and for its day the Bismark was second to that. As far as U.S. ships, the Missouri, Iowa, Wisconsin. The Nevada was getting obsolete in WW2. While a heavy cruiser is impressive in its own right, it just doesn't compare to the battleship. As far as the HMS Hood, it was stripped down too much and had no armor to go slug it out with the Bismark. It was out classed. The Bismark and the Yamato were taken out in the only way it could be done. Gang up on them and kick the shiit out of them with everything including the kitchen sink.
As far as heavy cruisers, the Japanese lost a heavy cruiser to a Destroyer called the U.S.S. Fletcher by using torpedoes. The Iowa and Missouri were the last of the great battle wagons.

As far as modern day cruisers, the most powerful in the world is not a Russian ship. It is the Aegis class cruiser. It is capable of over 40 knots with the most powerful weapons system on a ship in the world. The Tomahawk cruise missile alone is hard to beat. And then it also has the new weapons system for attack and defense that has no rival in the the world. While some of this is still highly classified some of it is on public record. The Phalanx system has been greatly improved as well as the air defense missile system. They can knock out the Exocet and the Chinese Silkworm and can take out 100 targets at the same time.

the most powerful ship afloat is teh Kirov Class guided missiles cruiser of the Russian navy.. i know it does not have the distinguished history of the above mentioned ship.. but as i said. its the most powerful warship ever built

TO the Gentleman below me. of coures i agree with your first point but not your second. Firstly, there is no such thing as an Aegis class. The ageis is a weapons system carried by the Ticonderoga class cruise. The Aegis system is primarily designed to protect aircraft carriers from missles and aircraft. It defensinve/offencive capabilities are mstly aimed against planes and although it does carry some tomahawks they are not that many nor are they a primary weapon. The Kirov Class is much bigger, almost the size of a WWII battleship and caries.. a S**T load more weapons including the Russian equivalent of the Phalanx defence system, which you can go ahead and scoff at but is none the less extremely capable.
The Ticonderoga class is argueably slightly more advance technologicaly, being a dacade more modern but it cannot compare the sheer firepower carried by the Kirov.
Now if you ask which ship is more ..successful, given that there are 27 ticonderogas currently in service, and i think that all the kirovs are out of comision because there is no money to maintain them.. i will most certainly have to agree with you!

oh and the maximum speed of the ticonderoga is 30 NOT 40 knots which is 2 knots slower than the Kirov
