i think the armed forces is a great career, but you have to get into a career field that interests you and the right service for you. Each service has a unique personality to it and just like any job if you arent interested in it then you wont be happy.
Also consider options such as officer or enlisted. Some people are not happy to take orders, be low man on the totem pole, or need more money so they do not at all enjoy being enlisted. Other people seem to really enjoy it. To become an officer you'll need a college degree and go through ROTC, the Academy, or OTS.

I've never been in, but I'm married to a Marine so I have a decent idea of how things work. To answer your question, it depends on what you're looking for. Job security is really good. Pay is okay. Not great, but they make up for it with benefits - medical, dental, free access to a lawyer and tax professionals, tax-free shopping on base, etc. The hours can be rough, but there are a lot of jobs to choose from so you can always get one that won't be as demanding. You lose some of your personal freedom. There are rules you have to follow even on your off time that the average citizen doesn't have to worry about. But most of these aren't anything that bother most people. You make some amazing friends. Your pay is adjusted to fit the area where you live. You get the chance to travel and see the world, although you always have to be concerned about being deployed to a war zone. One good thing is that if you choose to stay in only for a few years, many employers love to hire former military - especially if you got training in the military that is relevant to another career.
It may be a little rough on your spouse, if you have one. My career has suffered a bit because my husband has had to move a couple of times and every time I settle into a job, we have to go somewhere else. But even that hasn't been too bad. Oh, and you get military discounts just about everywhere.
Hope this helps! Good luck!

It's an ok career, but not an easy one. It takes a certain type of person to make a good career out of it. It's even harder for any potential spouse to deal with. My advice is go to school and get a good job. I'll be honest, I was in the military for four years, and it sucked. The lifestyle is just not for everyone.

We were in for over 20yrs and loved it. Absolutely the best people in the world to work with (that includes all the services), lots of interesting career fields (many hi-tech), great training and the opportunity for advanced education. It’s a great chance to do something for your comrades, your country and yourself.
Make sure you get a career field that you're really interested in.

Yes.
I'd still be in the Air Force if I hadn't developed frontal lobe epilepsy from being in a helicopter too much (rapid changes in air pressure brought this on.)

It can be, but these days it's a very dangerous career, too. I'd pass and look at other options.

If you passed high-school, then no, heck, I'd never risk my life in a job, it's why I left the army when the American/British invasion, sorry, liberation of Iraq begun.

It's a great place to be if you enjoy long jogs early in the morning, doing pushups, drinking, and killing people. Noone else offers anything close. And you can get the opportunity to play with explosives.
