They live in a world almost entirely without visible light, and under tremendous pressures, and have adapted to life in those circumstances.

They have developed all of their adaptations for an environment without light from the sun. Some will obviously have light sources incorporated into them because of the lack of light, and since no plants can produce food through photosynthesis this far down, they will be carnivores (thus have carnivore adaptations) and will be able to capture any animal that goes that far down. Also, in some cases, they will eat animal remains falling from the above ocean.
Most of these adaptations will definitely look cool.

They are separated from all other similar species because they have adapted to the high pressure, low (or no) light, and cold temperatures, while their cousins could not (and may continue to live at shallower depths). Hence, they are free to adapt by using natural mutations which would be detrimental at shallower depths. That's why they look different (=cool, which I agree with).

Because they have evolved and adapted in areas of higher pressure, less light, different temperatures, etc.

They often have different adaptions, which may lead to the "cool looks that you mentioned.

Most of the time it is only because we have seen nothing like them before. They aren't "different" any more than they likely think we look "different".
