... Walter Reed is just the start.. But in all seriousness, we've spent so much on Iraq whlle our returning injured veterans face lack of sufficient care and follow up, much less being constrained to wait months and months for the paperwork mill to draw a first check re their disabilities.

The entire veterans hospital sytem is a disgrace!

(BUT. as far as the paperwork is concerned, and in all fairness it cannot all be blamed on the present administration. A friend's g'mother worked for fed. govt. for 30 years. She told us that she and many others as well, took two 45 min. breaks twice a day, took hr and 1/2 -sometimes 2 hour lunches, and basically did little or no work for the entire 30 years of her government service. This type of behavior is widespread amongst government workers.

The president needs to crack down on these workers also, at least as far as the massive paperwork is concerned regarding these veterans.
Apparently these workers will continue to take advantage of this long-standing behavior as long as nothing is done about it.
In the interim, I have no problem with higher taxes to pay for continued EFFICIENT long-term care for our returning veterans. And instead of all of this lip-sevvice re hospital care, the president needs to take a good look into the work habits of govt. workers.

Are you willing to support another hundred billion dollars for new and/or improved hospitals, more doctors, and an efficient system to assure that these veterans receive their well-earned disability payments in a timely manner?

Something "definitive" was only being done AFTER it was exposed in the media and the administration felt the sting from the American people.

Did you expect US Govt. run hospitals to be good? First off anything run by the US Govt. won't be up to par but you put the added pressure of a lot of 1000s of US troops who are coming back from war and that spells disaster. VA hospitals have been terrible since the Vietnam war. But that's just how the US Govt. is run & that's not the Govt. fault it's the people of America who only care about these things when they show up on the evening news.

VA hospitals have always been poorly run. I hope something is finally done about it. People who lay their lives on the line deserve better. The girl below me is correct. If the "liberal media" hadn't exposed the problems, nothing would have been done. There they go, undermining the troops again.

Has been declining for years and long before Bush got in office. At least something definitive is now being done!

Yes, the veterans hospital system is a great example of socialized or "universal" health care.
