Usually, there are several comets in the sky; they're not very rare. With just your eyes, without binoculars, on a good dark night you can see down to about -6.5 magnitude.

Comet C/2006 P1 ( McNaught ) is at magnitude -5.5 and fading fast, but is visible only in the Southern himisphere.

Comet 8P/Tuttle will be visible in late Dec 2007 - early Jan 2008.
