Well, if the reasoning behind it works, I'm all for it. They are bringing it out early this year to conserve energy..anything that helps the planet is alright with me. I'll happily lose an hour's sleep for that.

Daylight Savings Time has it roots back in early America and farming requirements. It was a way to adjust the day to the need of the farmer and the crop planting / harvesting schedule. It was a good idea at the time, but at the time over 50% of the population was involved in farming. Now the figure is about 5%. This goes back to the time where 1 Iowa farmboy would do more useful work before breakfast or after school in 1 day than most government or state employees do in a month. Farmers didn't have the benefit of artificial lighting, huge John Deere tractors or GPS navigation of fields, or satellite analysis of the land. In order to survive and feed their neighbors the day had to be adjusted to the job. Made perfect sense at the time.
Now, it's irrelavant. What makes the early onset of the "new" DST is yet another stupid act of congress. I don't know why your teachers aren't telling you this. This is part of the comprehensive energy plan that is somehow supposed to save energy. Yeah, right. If you believe that, call me. I got a bridge for sale.
This is what happens when a bunch of out of touch lawyers on drugs (Congress) start messing with engineering or technical issues. They are beyond clueless. What is even more frightening is that there are some people out there that actually believe this is going to help and reduce greenhouse gasses which oh by the way come from the ocean and not a result of human activity.
Stupid. Senseless, innefective. Need I go on?

Antiquated and pointless in this day and age...and if they want to change the time, why don't they reverse it so when the days are shorter we make them longer?

I think it's silly that we do it. Not every state in the US follows it, and I think we're the only country to do it too.
