Ok. I have 2 slots for memory on my dell E1505. Both are filled with 512 s of ram. So altogether i have 1 gig. I want to be ready for vista in the near future. So will vista home premium run AS GOOD as my laptop runs xp with just 1 gig. Or will i have to shell out the $ to get 1 1/2 gigs of ram?

Whats a good brand of ram thats cheap too then?

I already have a good video card. a 256 mb video card to be exact. My proccesor is a core 2 duo @ 1.83. So my laptop is really good. So will vista run fast with only a 1 gig of ram.

Why even bother switch, if you have XP your good enough, the only cool think i like about vista is the look and the new MS Office 2007!... But Microsoft had a few downloads, called powertools, that can make your xp look like its Vista... i cant remeber the exact link, but google Vista powertools for xp.. In the next 2 years Microsoft will ahve a new operating system out.. and will you switch again?.. Unless your doing it illegally.. im sure you woundnt mind, but keep your Xp if thats what you got I know people who still use 98 and are still fine!

to get the most out of Vista, for Prem version, you would need at least 2gig, Ultimate needs 4 gig, since both would require a lot of power and resource to run Vista nicely. If your computer isn't powerful or doesn't have enough ram, even if you use Prem or Vista, your Windows would switch back to Vista Basic, so your computer could run properly. So, get as much as memory you can for Vista. Since your Dell has 2 slots, each slot would use 1gig each. Do you know what type of RAM it uses? You can either remove the bottom plate cover of RAM compartment and read the label or go to http://crucial.com and let it scans your computer, then it'll tell u the right type.

XP doesn't need all that power memory to run. Most of Vista is graphic, that's why.

As for brand name of ram, i could careless, if it works then it works. I've use off brand name rams, and they run just fine. Cheap is what i'm after.

Vistas minimum working condition is 512mb of ram minimum and 128 mb video ram minimum, whereas windows xp is 64mb minumum ram and 32 mb minumum video ram, so vista will only work half as well so 1 1/2 gigs should be equivilent, also, windows vista takes up 2 gigs of hardrive space without programs. i have 2 gigs of ram in my custom desktop and a 150gb hd with amd sephon liquid cooled and vista locks up on that so i just went back to XP, because vista eats to much memory.

i have windows XP home and vista ultimate both running off my partitioned hard drive, and i have a Pentium 4 2.53 GHz processor with 640mb of ram and have noticed that vista runs much faster than windows XP does and XP was the OEM operating system. so not even a gig of memory is required to run vista quite fast.

i would only go to vista if ur laptop has a good video card, in other words, not a crappy integerated intel one, and if you have a non intel one, then u probly have a significant portion of the memory taken over by the vid card since ur using a laptop, and so i wud recomend upgrading the ram

overall my recomendation would be to not upgrade, xp will be fine for years more, and if ur using a laptop like that, u certainly dont have money coming out of ur bum

1 GB will run it with no problem. It will not be as fast as XP with the same configuration. Hold off on the upgrade until some of the bugs have been worked out.
