Are you using a gravel vac? The tank shouldn't smell if you are doing regular water changes. How's the filter? If a fish dies, breaks down and gets sucked up into the filter, it will stink. Make sure you can account for all your fish. A dead one can cause so many problems if not removed promptly. Sometimes it's hard to tell.

Well some types of fish just tend to be very dirty so it may be your fish. I would clean it more often like get a vacuum for the pebbles, those work really good. And make sure you have the right sized filter for your tank, change the filter pads frequently too. When you go to completely clean the tank scrub off any decorations, I use a toothbrush it works wonders!! The have certain solutions you use to soak your tank & accessories in...it's called Seri Clean made by Jungle. A place called That Fish Place sells it for only $4 something. Their website is www.thatpetplace.com

First change out the filter medium. Then go and change your water, about 30% of it. Replace it with the same amount of course.
Then do this again in a week. It should be better by then.
Make sure that You change your water at least once a month for fresh water and once a week for salt water.
Make sure that you change your carbon filter at least once a month as well. It should be fine after that.
Good luck. !

WOW thats a big tank! I suggest you clean it, but all your fishes in your bathtub (if you have one, i hope you do) and clean it out, tanks that big neeed cleaning at least once every two months, .. you can also try by replacing the filter, and adding a little salt.... I worked at a pet store once and these were the things they taught me.. i hope it helps for a 55 gal tank!
Good luck!
