pokemon is many things.
it's a card battling game, where you use actual cards
it's a TV and movie series
it's a handful of video games
it's a bunch of toys
--------
in the cards, you have a random number of pokemon to start with. perhaps even as little as one. you take turns drawing cards to see outcomes.
in video games, it's one of the most balanced battle systems i've come across in 20 years of video games. superdork explained the battle system already, and there are also puzzles, though usually easy, in the games.
in the movies and shows, it's this boy named ash that really should be older and have kids, and his journey through the world. he encounters many of the pokemon, and learns lessons as he grows and becomes the worlds greatest pokemon master. i don't think he's ever supposed to succeed though, because in real life, humility requires that there be people that are more specialized than you, in any given field.
-------
the idea behind them is that somehow, they are animals, but also, somehow they are computer information, and can be stored in computers in the video games. they are carried around in pokeballs, which are small balls that are generally the size of a golf ball, up to the size of a small coconut. most are about the size of a racquet ball.
most monsters have an elemental property, such as thunder, fire, earth (ground, rock, grass or bug), or other fields, such as psychic, dark, steel, fighting, and flying. there are 17 types in all. every single type is weak to at least one other type. a fighting move does good damage to dark types. dark moves hurt psychics, and psychic moves hurt fighters. kinda like rock, scissors, paper

Pocket Monster. Gotta catch them all.
It's also a cartoon, a video game, and a money making machine for Nintendo and its creator.
In the Pokemon game, you play as a trainer who's goal is to catch and collect Pokemon and then train them to they get more powerful so you can battle other trainers for badges, which you need if you want to be the champion. You start out with 1 of 3 types of Pokemon, usually fire, plant, and water. As you walk around different regions, you'll come across wild Pokemon. To catch them, you need to send out your Pokemon to do battle with the wild Pokemon until its lifepoint is low, then you toss out the Pokeball to catch it. After you catch it, it's yours to control. So you continue to go around catching as many as you can to add to your collection. Currently, there are over 300 Pokemon in all the various Pokemon games. If you've played one Pokemon game, then you've played them all. All the Pokemon games have the same concept.
