Where would you say are the best FREE places to go in California?
I live in California and it seems that every place charges a fee, even if you just want to go there to get out of your car and walk around, there is a parking fee. I can understand camping fees, hotel fees, if you want to buy food or water or see a show, but there are limits to me and my willingness to pay, so where do you like to go, where you can pack your own lunch, park and just have a good time and leave?

It depends where you are in California. Most places have parks that are free where you can enjoy the scenery and a picnic. If you live near the ocean, a walk on the beach and a spectacular sunset is still free. Many museums will have certain days set aside as free admission days. Balboa Park in San Diego rotates the museum that is free each week and parking in the park is free. One of my favorite free things to do in California is to have a bonfire on the beach. Many wine regions of California offer free wine tasting. I just returned from a day of wine tasting in Nevada County. We visited 6 wineries, tasting wine at each and not one of them charged at all. This is not true in all wine regions, but is true for many areas and wineries. Even in Napa there are a few that still offer free wine tasting (Rombauer and V.Sattui).

I hope you come up with some good ideas to try because there are some great free things still available to do.....though it may take some searching.
