How do TV shows get ratings?

I think they get it by how amny people watch the show, but how do they know whos watching?

it's a complicated answer...households are selected to participate in neilsen ratings surveys..they keep logs of what they watch...networks take those numbers and go from there...i never trust the ratings numbers cuz there are way too many variables to take into account...
