You will definitely be in ALOT of pain, especially if you have low pain tolerance. The bad news is that it hurts to eat, so I recommend not eating anything that is remotely close to hard. The good news is that the only food that probably won't hurt to eat is ice cream. So, getting your braces can be your excuse to pigging out on ice cream. But, don't worry your teeth will feel just fine after a few days and you will be back to eating regular foods. To lessen the pain just take and advil or ibuprofen. And, if your wires are irritating or cutting your gums or lips put wax on the spot where the wire is sticking out. I got wax from my orthodontist so if they don't give you any ask if they have some or where you could get some. GOOD LUCK and remember braces are definitely worth it in the end!!!!!!

I'm 23. I had braces when I was 15 and got them off before I turned 17, so only about 2 years cos my teeth really did good with the braces.
For pain, I was given this little tub of clear gel that you can put on your teeth and gums and numbs it all but I forget what it was called. Sure it will hurt for a few days. If you can't take normal aspirin or panadol, try to get over the counter strong pain plus or similar, that works well. Sometimes it might knock you out, but its a good excuse to go home from school.
What hurt the most for me was the bands - when they are new they don't stretch as much. A tip for that would be to stretch them with your fingers for a minute before you put them in.
For food, just stick to soft, cool stuff, drink plenty of water and avoid hard food like nuts and chips, and really soft pliable food like bread and lollies (they stick really bad to the braces).
Hope this helps and good luck.

Advil or any type of medicine like that helps with the pain. Your mouth isn't gonna be hurting alot at first, just maybe after a few hours or days...everyone's different. Uh, stay away from hard stuff for A WHILE soft stuff like soup [I know it sucks] or some types of oatmeal are good to eat. Even sandwhiches like just plain peanut butter are ok. Try not to drink really cold or really hot drinks for a while. Good luck. I've had mine off for a year now, and they weren't really that bad. They'll be off before you know it and soon you'll have pretty straight teeth.

It's okay. I had horrible teeth and got braces. Just be sure to take some aspirin or Tylenol/Advil/Motrin BEFORE YOU GO TO THE DOCTOR. Buy a tube of Orajel or something similar. That will numb your mouth. Your teeth will hurt for the first few days. If you absolutely cannot eat because it hurts too much, drink nutrition shakes. You should get used to them in 3 or 4 days. Just be careful.

yeah getting braces sux a lil sometimes, i had them for almost three years...when i first got them, soft foods didnt make my mouth hurt so bad, like potatoes and applesauce, ice cream stuff like that. when you first get them, your mouth will be kinda painful for a few days, maybe even a week but after that, you probably wont even notice them, i didnt. just dont eat really hard foods after you get them, like dont bite into an apple because then you may break a bracket. then comes the monthly checkups and changing of the bands and tightening of the brackets....that kinda sucks too but the pain goes away faster usually by the next day like overnight...but tylenol always helps and if you could see if your orthidontist can prescribed you something better since you are so sensitve to pain:)

just before you go to the orthodontist, take some motrin or tylenol or whatever. Trust me, that helps the pain afterwards since its still gonna be working by the time your finished. As for the food, just cut it up into smaller pieces for the first week or so, and chew on your back teeth. hope that helps!

After you get them the pain won't come until about 4 hours later. I took some Motrin and only ate soft foods for a couple of days I just got them a week ago and they don't hurt anymore. Godd Luck!
P.S. A lot of food will get stuck in them and If they tell you that you can't eat popcorn you but you popcorn just let it get soggy on your tongue.

ok, i had braces for 7 years and got them off last month. Eat soup and mashed potatoes before the visit. Then eat soft foods. Dont worry...after about 1 month or two, you can eat trident and orbit gum. Dont suggest bubalicious cuz it sticks! Eat soft things. Mash food with fork. Chew food lightly but up to 20 times.
GOOD LUCK !!!!!!!!! xoxo
