I have new dell laptop with a 60 gb harddrive in it now. But i have a serial ATA harddrive that i use to use for my desktop but the desktop crashed and i need some information off of the drive...i have a Serial ATA power supply and data cord...and i was wondering if i could use the power supply to power the harddrive and use the cord to plug in the laptop. Is this possible? and if so is there anything that could go wrong..last thing i need is to screw up a brand new 1000 dollar laptop =/ thank you very much...

your best bet is buying an external enclose case designed for desktop HD (there's also one for laptop HD), make sure the case is using SATA connection, then you're all set, just put them together, power it up and you can drop and drag all you want.

Is your laptop sata or pata?

If it's sata, you may be able to make a custom lead to connect the drive to the laptop instead of it's own drive... with an external power supply. But get it wrong, pooof, 1 dead laptop and no warranty.

Buy an external sata to usb case designed for 3 1/2 inch disk drives is the best bet... plug the disk in, power it up, connect the case to the USB on the laptop and you should see the disk with your data.

Anyway... when you say 'crashed'. I assme you mean the hardware failed in some way that left the disk OK.

I had a laptop come to me that had a destroyed hard drive due to a ladies 14 year old son slamming the lid shut. I had a laptop here that had only been use for a couple months and was destroyed beyond repair due to lightning. The battery and hard drive were not damaged being one of the few things that weren't damaged. I used the hard drive in her computer and it worked great. I might also add that the two computers were the exact same model.

As far as I know Laptops cannot use drives made for Desktops. Everything about the drive right down to the size is different.
