I recommend a laptop no more than 1 year old. There is no difference between notebooks/laptops, just the name. I would recommend a processor that's either a single core (2.8GHz +) or a dual-core (1.8GHz +), 512 + MB of RAM, 80 - 100 GB hard drive, 14 to 15.4 inch screen.

First of all, DO NOT BUY USED OR REFURBISHED! Its just not worth it, you can get something for what you've mentioned for about 5-600$ brand new! I would suggest brands such as Dell or HP, good overall hardware and you should find something for what I've mentioned. Better yet, the 5-600 dollars you will spend will get you some pretty good power overall. You will be surprised what you can find for around this price range or maybe even slightly cheaper. Notebook, laptop, same thing! To future proof your purchase, go for something with Dual core and at the very minimum 512MB Ram. Intergrated graphics is fine and is the best you can expect for this price range. Let me know if you need further information.

Well really there isnt much too look for...just make sure that everything works...a lot of computers have self diagnostics that you can run which would check all the hardware on it...and i think that a laptop and notebook are the same thing since i have never really seen a difference. But go with a trusted brand...i think that Dell is the best but also sony vios are good....and HP's...also apple computers are really good but they can be pricy. For what you want go with a midrange price...you dont need anything hightech but you dont want a junky computer. I hope this helps....good luck

notebooks are slimmer by about .25 in or so, sleeker too. The top of the line laptops now are Macs, BUT I hate macs so I got a Sony Vaio. Referbished you will prolly find one about $400. I got mine with an upgaded 2.2 Ghz processor.
