it is actually essential for the benefit of endurance training...controlled breathing, steady breathing while swimming for a long length of time so as not to tire yourself out.. generally in a long race you breathe every 3rd stroke...rythm(sp?)...helps ya keep a steady pace...
The main purpose if for sprints.but it also would pertain to you wanting to hold your breathe for as long as possible for any race!
example: you do not want to breathe when doing a short race such as a 50 freestyle as it would get in the way of your time...i mean slow you down. If you can swim a 100 freestyle and go without holding your breathe as long as you can that is also great! Every time you bring your head up out of the water you are creating added time....every second counts! Every little movement in the water means seconds and you want the least amount of movement against the water as possible.
Head down....look at the bottom....hold your breathe...and go go go go go go go!!!

Because you have to make sure when you surface you get enough oxygen. This means your breathing has to be in the same rhythm as you swimming.

swimming is like running. when you run, you need to breathe in order to keep your lungs and heart pumping. since swimming involves water, you need to voluntarily help your lungs breathe. a synchronized inhale and exhale will regulate the flow of air in the water, as you do your strokes.
if you don't breathe properly or don't do a synchronized breathing in water, water might enter your lungs, or loss of air will give you a panic attack. we don't want you to drown in a competition.

For anaerobic swimming it is not important unless you wish to live to swim another time, for aerobic swimming it is vital because the muscles need oxygen from breathing air to continue to burn energy.

you usually want to breath every three strokes, because then you um, don't die. Make each breath quick though, so you don't slow down. (referring to competitive swimming like I do)
