Roger Federer, in an interview about 2-3 years ago, was asked if there was any shot in tennis that he needs to improve. Roger replied that he would like to hit a better forehand drop shot on clay similar to Carlos Moya, Juan Carlos Ferrero...and other great claycourt players. It's not that he can't hit one, its just that his other strokes are so Pure and Powerful, that Roger doesn't need to end points by dropshot. However, Roger is also smart enough to know that if he starts hitting great forehand dropshots he can save energy by reducing the number of long rallies. Saving energy is very important over the course of a long tournament like Roland Garros / aka The French Open. Achieving great results on clay requires a tremondous fitness level which past champions like Jim Courier, Andre Agassi, Thomas Muster, Ivan Lendl, and Rafael Nadal all posses. Federer knows there are a lot of fit players on tour, and the key to winning in the later rounds is to save energy by beating your early round opponents with less effort and in fewer sets. That will be the key for Roger to do well in his quest for a final grandslam, and hitting better dropshots can help him achieve this goal.

I saw him do one back in 2005, which made me turn and spit orange juice all over my friend. Ok, maybe I just wanted to do that, but it was funny anyway. Like you said, he executes all other shots with near perfection, including his forehand. He can do so much more with his forehand than a dropshot, and if he gets a huge opportunity to use a dropshot, I bet you he'd run around it and hit it on his backhand. He does do drop-volleys on his forehand though :D

i mean if you had fed's topspin forehand why would you even try one? i have seen him hit them before though, and he does slice the forehand occasionally, especially the "squash" shot.

I've never seen him hit one either. drop shots are low percentage shots, so he is probably smart to not hit them. Moreover he has no need to hit them when he can hit every other shot in the book, and more.
