You don't say how old you are. Is it actually only as thick as a string? Or is it thicker? What color is it? What does it feel like?
You could have a cystocele or rectocele, which means the wall of your vagina is weakened and the bladder or rectum are pushing against that wall and into the canal.
Have it checked out by your gyn.

First you should determine whether or not your boyfriend knows anything about vagina's before he points "weird things" out to you. Second, you should go to the doctor and have the physician doing your pelvic exam tell you what it is. It could possibly be dangerous. There are a lot of things it could be. But doctor knows best in instances like these.
