Are you asking for an explanation of rhythm guitar as opposed to lead guitar?
Typically, the rhythm guitarist strums cords in rhythm to the tune, while the lead plays more melodic licks and solos.

Check out George Barnes. Great jazz guitarist who was an excellent rhythm guitarist as was Herb Ellis. Guitar in the early days of jazz wasn't really a solo instrument.. Charlie Christian brought it to the forefront.

Rhythm guitar players work with the drummer and bass player more then the lead guitarist. They set up the beat and hold down the groove. Some of the best guitarist's of any genre are rhythm players. while the lead guitarist solos, the rhythem guitarist holds the song together. One of the best examples of this is Keith Richards, the best rhythem player ever.

in jazz, rhythm guitarist provides harmonic accompaniment for other instruments (like piano). this is especially true in big bands, where the guitarists would strum every quarter notes, locking in with the walking bass. (freddie green came up with this) there really is no clear line that distinguishes a rhythm guitarist from a lead guitarist, and in jazz guitarists often take featured solos as well.
