Thank you very much for the question.
I left the Republican Party after the 1988 primary (I voted for Pete DuPont). Recently, everytime Republicans have run on conservative principles they have won. The problem is that once they get to Washington, they become as bad as the liberals they nominally oppose. They deserved to get kicked-out of Congress. Where is the smaller, less onerous government we were promised in 1994? Where is the radical change in the tax code? Where is the lowered spending? They couldn't even cut the National Endowment for the Arts.
People always gripe about the lack of bi-partisanship in Washington. What a lie! For the last 12 years Republicans and Democrats were extremely bi-partisan on the issue of spending your money.
Republicans need to wake-up and hold whomever they vote for accountable to conservative principles. Until then, they deserve to lose.

Because the Dems CAN and HAVE defeated "a true Conservative".
Everyone in the Conservative movement want's Reagan back. Heck I want Reagan back... but he ain't coming back.
Reagan was the exception to the rule. Look at Barry Goldwater, a "true Conservative" if there ever was one... and he got crushed like a bug.
Many Conservatives only talk to other Conservatives, so because everyone they know is a Conservative, they think everyone is a Conservative. (The same is true of Liberals incidentally.) They think if you just ran "someone like them" everyone would vote for him.
Well in reality it doesn't work that way. "True Conservatives" and "Real Liberals" represent maybe 20% of the voting population out on the far edge of each party. This means they turn off more voters than they attract, and they tend to get crushed like bugs.

The secular progressive media such as the New York Times, NBC News, Los Angeles Times, The Atlanta Journal Constitution, CBS, CNN etc do not want you to know the truth. National elections are not won in California, New York and Massachusetts. Its won in states from Minnesota to Ohio straight down to Oklahoma to Mississippi. American's Heartland. That's where it is won.

Name a true conservative.
I don't think there has been one in over a quarter century. You may be confusing true conservatives with evil, hateful people, who do exist today.
If you could come up with a true conservative, I would vote for them.

If that is true than the Democrats will have a cakewalk in the '08 election.

Because it isn't true. There are places where the Democrats have a majority, and no alternative candidate can win, regardless of philosophy.

Apparently you missed the midterms, where plenty of conservatives got "served".
