I want to introduce you to a wonderful and useful book. It's called a Dictionary. You may have one around the house, and most schools still keep them around.
A dictionary is an alphabetical list of words and their meanings. If you know the alphabet, you can find your way around in the dictionary because in most dictionaries, the first and last word on each page is listed at the upper outside corner of the page.
Thus you can flip through the dictionary and find the entry for the word "lightning," and the entry for the word "thunder." You can then read the definitions (meanings) of the words right off the page.
This will take you about 1/5 the time it takes to post a question on Yahoo!Answers. This is true even if your computer is already turned on.
Dictionaries have other advantages besides speed and efficiency. They don't require electricity. The batteries don't run down and they don't crash. They are really wonderful tools.
Another, and perhaps the most important advantage is that they are accurate. Several of the other answers to your question are wrong, either through foolishness or a misguided desire to trick you. A dictionary will never do that to you.
So take my advice and start using the dictionary right now. You'll be glad you did.

Thunder is the sonic shock wave caused by the rapid heating and expansion of the air surrounding and within a bolt of lightning. The bolt changes the air into plasma and it instantly explodes, causing the sound known as a thunder clap.
Lightning is an atmospheric discharge of electricity.

Elmo_Caron is completely right. Imagine the sound from an explosion. It is the result of an extremely power air pressure shock wave produced by an extremely rapid release of energy. The explosive is the lightning and the explosion is the thunder.

OK!
Lightning = electrical discharge, seen as a flash or "bolt" of bright light.
Thunder = sound, heard as a rumble or boom, caused by the sudden superheating of the air after the electrical discharge of lightning passes through it.
A bolt of lightning may be miles long. The speed of sound is about 1/4 mile per second, so it may take a few seconds for all of the sound pressure waves to reach an observer after a big lightning discharge. That results in the characteristic prolonged "rumble".
Done.
