I have one betta fish and an apple snail that i just introduced to a .5gallon starter tank. My betta fish is pretty cranky (he flares a lot) but i did some research and i've been told that they would be ok together. My betta Moe keeps flaring and staring poor Scoot down, but hasn't nipped at him or anything. Should i be concerned... or should i give them some time to get used to each other. The snail doesn't seem to be bothered at all by the betta. If any of you have some experience with bettas and snails i'd quite appreciate your answers. thanks!

please keep in mind that i'm just STARTING... i do plan to get a bigger tank in the future... but i think 5 gallons is pushing it for one fish and a snail... I've actually noticed now that the Betta is sort of staying away from the snail... i think he's scared of it or something... anyway they've been together all night and the Betta seems to be fine with it.

I use to raise fish. I use to have Betta. You should have no problems. And most Betta flair their fins out. It's a Betta thing. If you get a 10 gal and put in a divider and get another male they will both flair out and show more colors. It's quite beautiful
to see. Just don't remove the divider or they will fight to the death. Betta are like birds in the fl airing aspect they do it to attract females and warn other Betta's of their presence they are territorial fish.

Your tank is extremely small and your betta just may be very unhappy at sharing such a small space with something else. You should have a minimum of a 1 gallon container, and preferably around a 2.5 to keep a betta really happy. The more space the betta can put between himself and the snail, I think the less stressed you'll find he'll be. Plus, you'll see a lot more happy, active betta really showing off his colors and fins and zipping around the tank as well!

I HATE FISH BOWLS. That's not nearly enough space. Betta's are tropical fish, and they need heated water to live properly. Also of note, Betta's live in rice paddies in their native home, and while they may not be super deep, they are long and wide. Betta's are labyrinth fish, and they can breathe from the surface, but keeping them in such small containers without a filter raises many health concerns, such as ammonia poisoning, among other things. Please get your Betta and snail at least a 5 gallon tank. The whole setup would cost you no more than 30 dollars, and you could put it on a dresser or desk with no worries. That would enable you to add a heater and filter...something no fish should have to do without.

Don't worry about them. If the betta doesn't nip at the snail. The betta will get used to the snail after a while.

I think it should be Ok for these reasons
.The snail is used to being put down in water
.Beta fish are very territorial at first, but they do settle down
.Give them time, they might become best friends :)
