There could be a number of different events to answer this one.

1. Onset of WW1. This proves that new idea of wars will beat old traditional ways. This also ends the Imperial Age of Europe.

2. Invention of the electric light bulb. This also comes with the introduction of power plants.

3. Development of the automobile. This brings upon a more Mobile environment. This also changes the landscape of countries with paved roads.

You have to define your terms a little more precisely. What do you think a 'traditional' world is? And what do you think a 'modern' world is?
If you mean the difference between, say, the 19th and the 21st century, the transitional events could be the discovery of flight, of computers and of wireless communication (the internet has made a tremendous difference).
