I sprained my foot 10 days ago -- went to ER and got it x-rayed etc. It still hurts after wrapping it and using crutches; also iced it and elevated it as instructed. I still have pain every time I step but by end of the day it is really swollen. Yesterday so swollen I had to change my shoes when I got home from work before I had an auction to go to. When I got home from that a few hours later it was even more swollen -- skin stretching. I expect pain for a few weeks, but why so swollen? I followed up with my regular internist 4 days after the injury (twisted my foot in a pot hole near my office in NYC), but I am concerned that it still swollen so much -- more now than before. Also had some calf pain last night during the night; I don't wear heels at all and have a desk job but I do commute on three trains etc. to work 5 days a week. Should I be concerned? Go back to doctor?

You need to see the doctor for a repeat X-Ray. Often times the first X-Ray will not show a fracture due to the mass amount of swelling that is present. Another one will reveal the fracture. I'm not saying that you have a fracture; I'm saying that there is a possibility and the X-Ray should be repeated. Mean while, it is suggestible to alternate between hot and cold packs and see if it helps the pain and swelling; furthermore, keep your foot elevated as much as possible; if you have no allergies or other health problems, you may want to try some ALEVE to reduce the inflammation, but I would contact my doctor ASAP if I were you. Good Luck!

My right foot has been swollen for 7 days,I had a bad fall down cement steps mydoctor did blood work for a possible blood clot test came back negative I walk everyday most of the day and my doctor told me it was good to exercise by walking,it just bothers me as the swelling won't go down,I keep my foot elevated at night and in the morning the swelling goes down, also my foot doesn't hurt just feels a bit numb and a little pain going up my leg when elevated. I wonder maybe I should not keep my foot elevated at night and just use an ice pack for 10 15 or 20 minutes at the most. Doctor gave me water pills and I have a follow up with doctor in 2 weeks. I would like to receive some positive feedback concerning my problem. Thanks very much. Julie Gravells

i think sometimes xrays dont show small fractures because at the time of injury the foot or injury is swollen and since then you are having more swelling. you should go see a doctor you might have a blood clot now. something is going on your foot is telling you that by the swelling. when your at work do you keep you leg up ? you should it might be hurting longer because your unable to stay off of it for the six weeks it takes to heal just like a break a sprain takes time for the tissue to heal. good luck.

For now, keep it elevated as much as possible and take ibuprophen 2 x a day, up to 800 mg per time, and go back to the doc. Sprains take a long time to heal but you could have a fracture that was missed, the foot has a lot of bones and they do get missed on x-rays sometimes.

a sprained ankle takes quite a while to heal. It is going to hurt for awhile and it does not help to keep walking on it and straining it more. However, the calf hurting sounds fishy but it might just be from your muscles trying to compensate for your ankle. I would keep up the ice and elevation and try to stay off of your foot as much as possible. Give your doc a call just in case though and tell him the swelling is not going down!

The principles of R.I.C.E. apply to all strains and sprains.

As long as you still have swelling, you need to adhere to:

Rest: really try to stay off the ankle as much as possible.

Ice and Compression while the ankle is elevated will help reduce the inflammation and pain.

You are not resting the injury enough to let it heal, as a result you are getting micro tears in the injury which is prolonging the healing. You literally need to start the R.I.C.E. all over again.

Good Luck

Sprains can take up to 10 weeks to fully heal. I know I got one and it tuned a beautiful Purple color in about a week.

To help with the swelling, you can use gentle massage and comfrey cream. I use this all the time, with a much more severe problem, and it helps with the pain also. Also, make sure you elevate your foot whenever you can, particularly if you have been on it a lot.

the swelling is telling you that you are over doing it. You could also be wrapping it wrong. I know it takes time to learn how to wrap. You should be trying cold for 20 minutes. then heat for 20 minutes. use your crutches as much as possible.

Use Epsom Salt it makes the swelling go down. And it's very cheap and you can buy it at any grocery store or walgreens.
