Its a brown/black striped lizard with slick skin n a kinda long tail. If I have a heated rock, do I need a fluorescent light? I mean, they sell small containers for lizards/turtles. Those don't have a place to put a fluorescent light.

Depending on the lizard, heat rocks are NOT a good thing. UVB is needed.. Please release the lizard back to his "Natural" habitat since you found him in your backyard. It might be illegal to keep him.

I agree with KN - hot rocks shouldn't even be sold! There's no way to regulate their temperature and more often than not will burn your animal. If the rock gets wet at all (your lizard gets out of his water dish and walks across it or you spray it when misting a tank) they conduct electricity and will give you quite a shock!

Another issue with them is that they don't heat anywhere other than the rock - for your animal to be warm, he has to be on it. People used to think their animals loved them, because they never went anywhere else - truth was, it was too cold for them to go anywhere else! With a pad under the tank the heat diffuses through the substrate and a heat lamp is warmest at the center and cooler outward, so this gives the lizard 9or whatever you have) more of a range of temperatures so it can find a temperature where it's comfortable.

If you need a source of heat from under the tank (belly heat) go with an under tank heating pad. If not, just use a lamp from above. I use both, and let the under tank pad on 24/7, turn the lamp on during the day only.

no heat rocks lizards cannot feel small areas of intense heat they feel a more broad sense of heat. heated rocks tend to get small hot spots and will actually burn spots on your lizard. I know of one person who uses a heated rock successfully and he has it buried under sand and gravel basically it makes his substrate warm. you can use a normal lamp from home depot or wal mart just use a normal 60 watt bulb this is for basking light only you must still provide the necessary uva and uvb bulb whether fluorescent or incandescent to help with calcium. you can get a uva/uvb that is a heat lamp combined. they are not cheap though. you should really identify your lizard exactly and google a care sheet different lizards require different heat, humidity, diet etc. what copperhead said about the under tank heater and the basking area is also what I do and they are not priced much different than a heated rock.

Lizards basically need the UVB more than what they need the heated rock, I would opt for the UV and get rid of the rock, remember UVB lights don't have to be tubes they come in the form of light bulbs as well, I would suggest if there is not room for the light get a bigger tank

Well bud. depending on how small the lizard i would say no. if you have a chamelon or an anole lizard definately not. the only lizards i would say to let use the heating rock is desert type lizards. Armadillo, spotted, ect.. Just get a clamp light that will be no more than 10 bucks at most but make sure you get the right bulb. just email me any questions you have. ill be glad to help you

Depends on how well lit the area it's kept in is. It's going to need limited sunlight, or some form of UV at some point, such as from a florescent bulb to kill off excess skin microbes, and most creatures need UV for vital chemical reactions, such as the creation of Vitamin D in humans. I couldn't say what they'd be in a lizard though, but its instict is to lay out in the sun for a long time in the wild, so I'm sure it does more than just warm it.

You should NEVER and I mean NEVER use a heated rock. Get an under the aquarium heater instead. Heat rocks are very unsafe and can cause harm to your lizard.

you could enable it pass, and in case you somewhat desire a lizard analyze it and purchase one. in case you pick do this then you could discover out what type of lizard it is. get rid of the warmth rock it may burn the lizard, initiate a fireplace and lizards like warmth from above no longer under. you pick a UVB easy and a basking easy, you could pick a warmth source at night counting on the lizard. yet discover out what type of lizard it is so we are able to help you extra.

Wait until you can afford a light and a bigger container. If you already have the lizard, save your money and house it properly.

Lizards actually need full spectrum lights or they will develop calcium deficiency.

Well, without a light, how is he supposed to read? Sorry. Really.
I couldn't resist.
Can you not afford a light?
There are lamps that are suspended between two bent legs. They are used over plants. He'd like the light: it would remind him of the desert sun.
Happy lizard with a rock and a light to call his own!
