flamingoes, roadrunners, peacocks, turkeys and chickens can all fly. Living flightless birds are the ratites (kiwis, ostrich, emu, cassowaries, rheas), penguins (17 species), Galapagos cormorant, kakapo (a NZ parrot), several ducks (Campbell and Auckland Island teals, and some of the South American steamer ducks), and a number of rails (including the takahe, weka, etc). Recently extinct species (from the last couple of thousand years, due to human hunting) include great auk, broad-billed parrot, hundreds or even possibly thousands of species of rails, some penguins, moa, elephant birds, even some owls, pigeons (including the dodo and solitaire) and passerines (Canary Island bunting, Stevens Island wren, stout-legged wren and curve-billed wren; the last three all from NZ)
