Look what happened when they tried to make alcohol illegal!
It's not the governments job to protect us from everything that may harm us. If they did nobody would be able to do anything, because everything comes with some risk involved. Although with the way the trend is going, pretty soon the only legal place you'll be allowed to smoke will be in the far left corner of your basement, provided it is properly ventilated, every other Tuesday of the month. I think the smoking ban laws are getting ridiculous and I don't smoke.

Smoking should be illegal in the U.S. I can't stand walking down the street and have people smoking in front of me and smelling it the whole time, whatever happened to the term "fresh air." They are also a giant waste of money. How many people have to die before smokers realize they're killing themselves and others for a bad habit. My grandmother is in the hospital because she has emphesema from smoking. I don't understand why people start it.
To the smokers who answered this question. Why would you even compare smoking to farting, what's wrong with people. Smoking is done much more in public and more frequently than farting, and is certainly more fatal. WOW!
If it's not the government's job to protect people from things that can harm or kill millions or americans then why do have the military. Smoking kills more people than war.

Because people should have the right to do whatever they want with their own body as long as they don't hurt anyone else. If people want to smoke it's their choice, but I think it should be illegal to smoke around children and in public buildings. I don't think it's fair for the government to penalize private businesses for allowing smoking though. I think they want to control everything we do!

Have you ever heard of Prohibition? After fifty years of pressure from temperance groups, the government decided it would be a nifty idea to make alcohol illegal. And that worked out just swell, didn't it? Just like the so-called "war on drugs." Whta a joke that's become.
Turn those two stupid idea against tobacco, and you can just imagine what an epic waste of time and money a tobacco prohibition would be.

Man, there would be some really bitchy politicians and actors out there if this was illegal. We are still a free country. People have the right to smoke in there private car or homes if they choose to.

well i think it should but i remember when i was in 8th grade my health teacher told me that the reason they won't make it illegal is because the ciggarette comapanies support almost everything. Movies, tv commercials just by having one person smoke a ciggerette in it. So its because they support alot of our entertainment

Yes. But first, how about we make it a crime to fart in public. That is by far more disgusting than smoking, and methane gas is poisonous. By the way, after they outlaw smoking, which right of yours do you think they will set their sights on next?
