Someone told me recently that you don't put leashes on cats. So what am I supposed to do?

You can buy a harness and a leash to put on your cat. It is best that you have something to control your cat, as it might get frightened by something and run off. Check your local pet stores and you should take the cat in with you so you can find the correct size. Also, try to find a harness that has padding so that the straps will not rub your kitty raw.

Yes, you will need a leash to walk your cat anywhere, however I would use some caution before taking her to a large public place like a park.

First get a properly fitting cat harness (not a collar or your kitty will slip out of it and be up a tree before you can sat catnip) and a leash.

Let your cat get used to wearing the harness without the leash attached. Supervise her as she roams your home in her new accessory. Do this at least 3 or 4 times for short periods before attaching the leash.

Get your cat used to being on a leash INDOORS before bringing her outside. Make sure she feels confident and walks on the leash before venturing outdoors.

Once outdoors, use good judgement on when your kitty is ready for her public debut. Some cats never get used to harness and leash, or are scared to death when brought outdoors (especially formerly indoor cats). I am assuming you love your kitty - why else would you want to take her to the park with you? - and don't want to cause her any undo fear or torment. Remember that however scared your cat may appear, she is probably 10 times more frightened and confused in her own mind. Don't torture your kitty!

Some cats on the other hand LOVE to go for walks. I have a 12 year old calico that goes on a walk daily. I have another cat that is scared to even go out on the front porch. They are all different - do what is best for your kitten.

Harnesses work really good for cats. But I'd make sure to take time to train it on a harness & leash first. They will pretty much freak out at first when you put it on them. The kitten will run away if it gets even a little scared or hears loud noises it's not used to.

Well, you don't really need a leash. For the first time, try not to put leash on your kitten, and see what he is going to do. Most of the time when you first take your kitten out somewhere, they are really scared, so I think you kitten would be the same, so as I said, don't put the leash on your kitten for the first time, and if he triest to run away, you just hold him tight. And the next time you are going out, you know if you need to put leash on or not.

You can buy a leash for a cat, but make sure you get the harness kind and not the ones that just go on their neck. I have a cat leash (given to me by his previous owner), but I've never taken him on a walk 'cause I know people would look at me like I was crazy. lol

It's best to go buy a cat harness and a leash. Don't buy one meant for dogs, they aren't made the same way. Many years ago I had a Doberman and every time I walked her, my cat Midnight had to be walked with her, he loved being on a leash. This is the safest way for her to be outdoors. It's going to take some patience with her on this. Expect some resistence from her too.

It would be a good idea. Cats aren't the same as dogs, they don't always come when you call. They have a mind of they're own. You can put a leash on a cat, but you should use a harness.

Try a harness and leash idea. Sometimes they can back out of a collar. Make sure your cat is up to date on its shots as you dont want it to come home with some weird disease.

Yes on a leash only if its had all of its shots. There is plenty of disease to be found at a park.

As much as your think your kitten may have fun at the park, i advise against it because she wont. She will be scared, and confused-- cats really do not need excersize like dogs do and she will not play or run, she wont be curious about her surroundings, she will most likely just lay down and not move. Please dont take her, its just not a good idea, cats really do not respond well to that kind of stimulai and they would rather just be at home. They arent like dogs!!
