(1) Get an AMD computer - it will cost you a fraction of the price of the Intel computer and will run rings around it in processing power
(2) Get a Compaq or HP brand laptop - if you monitor their website, or ask for their mailers, they hold sales every couple of weeks and you can get one of their higher end models for about half off.
(3) Get 2 Gb of RAM or more - this may cost you extra up front, but in the end it will be worth it and you will save your hard drive
(4) Get Windows XP or Linux (Linspire or Ubuntu) on your machine
(5) It doesnt matter what size your hard drive is - if you get Windows XP make sure to have at LEAST 60 Gb of hard drive space. If you get Linux, you dont need that large a hard drive.
(6) Buy an EXTERNAL hard drive to hold your music and stuff. The size of hard drives keeps going up and up very quickly. You can buy a 200+ Gb external USB hard drive for about $100 nowadays. The top end drives now are 1TB (1000 GB) and larger. Those start at about $500 or so.
(7) Buy an EXTERNAL dual-layer DVD writer that supports ALL MODES (+ and -, R and RW, with lightscribe). This should only cost about $20 to $50 for a Sony model, complete with burning software.

With this configuration, regardless of what happens, your music and videos are safe, and if your DVD writer dies on you, you can replace it cheaply and in the meantime use the internal drive on the laptop for temporary burns. This will also save your harddrive's life as well, especially the extra memory.

Hope this helps, and good luck!

500 hundred is a little maybe way too low.. Amd's lowest processor is its sempron and intel's lowest is its celeron. You should atleast go up to 800
