The hurts we experience in life seldom seem useful at the time, but can they make us stronger? Or do they defeat us? I mean the child who is told "You'll never amount to anything" Or "You are just stupid! You're way to ugly for anyone to ever love you!You are lazy! You are to much of a sissy to be my son!"I think that words can distroy a self esteem and that sometime,it takes years of therapy to undo the hurt.Have you or anyone you know been able to over come in spite of words that hurt?

I believe that a person can over come a bad beginning and have a happy ending!

I was always told that my brother is the smart one, and I'm the one with common sense. My dad always favored my brother, thinking he was special because he was smart and talented. I did have counseling, and I found that you do learn from bad experiences and I learned to forgive my parents for saying stuff like that. It's what I believe about myself, not what others say about me, that counts. You have to learn to love yourself, whether it takes counseling or something else. I also found out that you can't control your parents or anyone else, but you can control yourself; how you think about yourself and how you react towards comments that people make. I can honestly say that I've overcome the feelings of inadequacy, but I slip once in awhile! Take care.

I have, after realizing that you have to fight fire with fire. If someone tells you how stupid you are, just say, "I'm smart, I'm smart, I'm smart," over and over again and eventually, you'll feel better.

You do need to develop some armor, though. I'm not saying we should all go around being nasty to each other, but at some point, people suck and will insult you, so you should be able to stand up to that.

Even so, the best way to make someone strong is to make him confident, and the only way to do that is to be positive. Which would make you more confident? Hearing, "I love you," and "Great job on your homework today," or "Be a man, stop crying," or "Why don't you get off your damn guitar and do something with yourself?"
