I had a hamster to that chewed on her wheel. your hamester is most likely trying to wear down her teeth since a rodents teeth never stop growing. I suggest buying wooden blocks that you get from the pet store to put in her cage. It helped my hamster stop chewing on her wheel.

Get rid of it right away!!!!! Metal chewing can lead to broken or misaligned teeth and death from not treating the teeth problems. Also a hamster can have their brain misaligned, in turn causing brain damage. Brain damage causes death. Go get a solid plastic wheel (silent one is great) and she'll be healthier. Give her carrots, half an apple to chew on instead, we've also used veggie flavored dog biscuits for chronic chewers.

i had a hamster that chewed the paint off of the bars of the cage, even though i had wood and other things in there to chew on, so i don't know if it tastes good to them or what, but i have discovered that vets don't deal with small rodents often enough to really know what's wrong with them, and they really don't live long enough to know what they have died from when they do die. (it usually happens so suddenly and it is hard to catch their symptoms early enough to be treated.) therefore, i don't know if it is really bad for them to chew on metal, maybe for the reason that they could chip thier teeth. their teeth never stop growing, so they will chew on whatever they have available.

Hamsters have very long and fast growing teeth, they need to chew on things to keep their teeth at manageable and painfree lengths-- chewing on the metal wears them down, a lot of small mammals do that its nothing to worry about, however if the noise annoys you get her a chewing block from the pet store-- they are made of minerals or of seed stuck together by molasses! tasty and noise free!

she chews on her exercise wheel to stop her teeth from growing too long. Hamsters die if their teeth are too long. Buy her some chew sticks, she would surely like it. Another reason why your hamster chews on her weel is maybe since her teeth are itching while growing.

All members of the rodent family need something hard to chew on to trim their teeth. If nothing safe is provided, they will find something on their own. Their teeth constantly lengthen, and will affect their ability to chew if grown too long.
