My family is planning to take a trip this summer to the greek islands in august and i have two children, one of 17 and the other of 16 and they are bringing friends. We want a place where they can have fun with their friends (good nightlife) and where there are many people of their age (mainly brits). where do you recommend we go: crete, santorini or the mykonos? Also, which towns in these islands are central to all the nightlife and good restaurants, and have good accomadation?

Mykonos is a great island for clubs and nightlife. It attracts a large range of people, young and not so young, but there for the same reason- nightlife. The main village is where the action is, so no need to go any further. But since you are going as a family you may want to stay out of town. Taxis are fairly cheap so your children should be able to get around without the need for a vehicle.
Do your research on hotels and such before you go though, because some places are not family oriented. Also, some of the beaches may not be family oriented either. They serve as an extension of the night scene. Picture a lot of skin and loud music.

Santorini is a great island but is more for couples than singles looking for clubs. That's not to say it is not fun. The atmosphere is less intense than Mykonos and there are some stunning beaches and sites to see. It may have a better overall family appeal.

As for Crete, it is a huge island, with two big cities (by island standards) plus many towns and resorts. Therefore the concentration of activities that exists on Mykonos and Santorini for that matter, does not exist here. Again, though, there is plenty to do and see on the island.

In the end, I would vote Mykonos, with the suggestion that you get your children their own room, and don't expect them home for breakfast. Enjoy!

Absolutely Crete if you are typical family on a budget. Your money goes further than in Santorini or Mykonos. Opt for the resorts of Malia or Stalis within 30 mins of Heraklion Airport. The Tourist Police ensure that these days the "main strip" in both places lets the kids have their fun while parents are left re-assured. Malia has an old town which has character and good restaurants just a hop, skip and a jump from where the main Brit holidaymakers go. But Brits will be Brits wherever they are. August in Greece - anywhere is HOT. Make sure you have accommodation with at least a powerful fan for each person for a good night's rest.

Santorini for sightseeing is nice. On the other hand Crete is a really big island ,lot of things to do there (nightlife, beautifull landscapes and beaches). Mykonos is mainly nightlife with the world famous Cavo Paradiso club and Super Paradise beach bar-club. check the source list for more info from the sites..... I have been in Crete and Mykonos and its hard to say which one is the best choice. The better choice for lots of Brits though would probably be Rodos or Kos islands. Hope you have a good time in Greece and maybe we see each other on one of those islands. Live your Myth

OK. I'm Greek so: Mykonos and Santorini are young peoples islands. You need stamina to survive. They can get pretty wild. Crete is big very big, it is about 400km across. Depends where you go in Crete you will or will not find action for the young. Crete you have to check out. Mykonos and Santorini are tiny by comparison. Santorini has no beaches to write home about. Mykonos does. And at least half of them are nude. But both have a night life to write home about.

Avoid Creta, although it is a very beautiful place, it really depends on where exactly you stay, it is such a big island, you don't even realise that it actually is an island. I would suggest Myconos, if your children are party - animals. Santorini also offers a variety of night life (plus the breathtaking views), but the beaches are far better on Myconos (if they ever wake up before 4 in the afternoon!).
As for Brits, I believe August is not really their season, at least not on Myconos and Santorini. In August you will find everywhere Greeks and Italians.

unless your primary goal is partying i"d say santorini. I recently went to both and enjoyed santorini much more. There is a lot more to look at (red sand beach is amazing, the caldera, the towns of fira and oia) and the beaches are just as good. Mykonos has some crazy parties and a younger/louder crowd whereas santorini is more laid back and relaxing. I think they are both about equally crowded depending on the time of year.

Even the smallest island in Greece has great night life in summer
Mykonos is a place young people have to go without parents
and parents without children !
Crete is quite big comparing to other two places:you can combine sightseeing with night life
Santorini is more for 'in love' people, but has good nightlife
you will love any place you choose, just keep an eye on youngsters

Then there is Ios and Rhodes and it actually is up to you and what you want to impart on your teens. A lot of carousing, drinking, sex, drugs and rock n'roll and exemplary hooliganism can be found in places in both Crete and Rhodes.
Santorini would be a good spot and nearly all the islands have a pretty good night life.
