My doctor says abstinence is a very unhealthy thing for a man to force upon himself. I don't think this means the Pope wants gay people to be unhealthy but given that science has determined that sex is an important part of life why would the Pope wish gay men to be abstinent?

I also believe it is unhealthy. By suppressing out natural urges we are suppressing a part of ourselves. Dr. Deepak Chopra mentions this in one of his books. He said that when you suppress something it has to be fulfilled in some other way. Suppressing these feelings can lead to aggression and psychological imbalances. Also, during sex our bodies release sexual tension and the chemicals serotonin and oxytocin - oxytocin helps to calm us down, relaxes us, and helps us sleep well. Although serotonin is the "feel good" chemical, too much of it can damage heart valves, and cause heart palpitations (by abstaining for long periods of time the serotonin levels reach unhealthy highs). Also, sex boosts the immune system and strengthens it against common infections, produces mood elevating hormones, like endorphins and others.

It reduces stress, heart disease and a study has actually confirmed that men who led a healthy sex life lived longer than their abstinent counterparts. Sex also protects testosterone which results in stronger bones and muscles. It is also a natural pain reliever, reduces depression, results in a healthier prostate, reduces cholesterol, burns calories, leads to increased levels of oxidation, enhances libido and overall longevity, increases energy, builds muscle mass, and strengthens heart (just like during a workout). There are numerous benefits to fulfilling this basic human urge, whereas suppressing it is anything but healthy.

Let's be honest. I do not care what people believe as long as they are honest. Now, in all honesty, and with all you know about legitimate medicine, which is more unhealthy both in actuality and in potential damage, anal penetration or abstinence? Certainly we can agree that in potential damage, anal penitration is far more dangerous.

Anyways, my understanding of Catholic doctrine is that the body and soul are at odds with each other. The body is very animalistic and wishes things that the soul does not, and the soul is only spiritual and does not care for the needs of the body. The correct course is to strike the balance where the body's needs are being met enough that it allows the soul to be spiritually uplifted to its maximum degree while still present in a physical world. This often means that the body will have things done to it that are not the best for it, so that the soul can be uplifted. Fasting for example.

I am not catholic or Christian BTW.

comfortable challenge, yet i'm going to provide perception. Gen all human spirits are made on the 6th day male and lady. with out going right into a superb style of reference, some chosen God's way, lots chosen devil's plan. God writes the names of people who chosen his plan in a e book. Jesus and devil are then given the interest of sowing those spirits into the international. SOOOO....That makes absolutely everyone around 6,six hundred years previous. for the period of that factor, you're able to have created institutions. that's not not common to have self assurance that our soul which keeps the concepts could understand those human beings. desire that enables Chris T

there's also a place called hell... according to the pope... and better yet, turn back the clocks and... The earth is the centre of the universe... according to the pope...

I don't really put much stock in what the pope says... It usually turns out wrong!

(I'm such a heretic!)

I gotta tell ya kid, the bible came way before modern science... and the pope's job is to tell people what the bible says... I'd listen to the doctor on physical matters, and listen to the pope on religious matters. And remember, it's harder to worship when your body is under stress.

I've always thought abstinence meant no sexual intercourse. Masturbation isn't sexual intercourse and therefore wouldn't be covered by the "abstinence" rule. I also have to wonder if abstinence and celibacy are the same thing?

I would check the data your doctor used to make that determination. did you? Or is that just the information you wanted to learn and didn't want to go any further to understanding your physical body.
People have been doing it for years without major repercussions.

Pope vs Doc ?

One cares for the soul [long term], the other the body [short term].

Hmmmmm..................Pope wins every time!

ps: gay men are called to be celibate or to overcome those abnormal feelings of attraction. It's their choice.

your doctor is wrong.
many men throughout history have chosen to live absinate lives, with no negative side effects.

and by the way, i don't believe the pope is the ultimate authority - look to God and the Bible, not man.
