If you've had an allergic reaction to penicillin before, your practitioner will ask the lab to test your culture to find out which other antibiotics will work against your GBS. If you're not sure whether you're allergic to penicillin, you might be given a skin test to find out if you can safely use this drug. Also if you have a c- section this would prevent any contamination at all. Hurry though you need to have your plans in order BEFORE you go into labor.

You definitely need to speak to your doctor about your penicillin allergy. Drugs vary, depending on the doctor, so I don't know that they will use penicillin. However, you should call him first thing tomorrow morning and discuss it. At 37 weeks, you could go into labor at any time, and want to be prepared!
Good luck!

Penicillin is one of the drugs for Group B Strep but there are several alternate drugs. Tell your doctor about your allergy and they will find something safe and effective. Lots of people are Group B positive. Don't worry....and good luck to you and your new baby!!!

You need to TELL them that you're allergic to penicillin. If your doctor doesn't know (don't assume they're reading your chart thoroughly each time they see you... they aren't) then you need to make sure you get the point across NOW. That way if something happens where you aren't coherent at the hospital it will already be noted in your medical records so they don't make that mistake.

i am allergic to penicillin, erythromycin, and doxycycline (the big 3 in the antibiotic world) and i had GBS with 2 of my pregnancies and was safely administered alternate drugs. talk to your doctor, anytime you go to a new doctor that is the first thing you should tell them...and if you have told them before then someone isnt keeping good records.....my OB had a big red sticker on my file that said warning drug allergy.....and the names of them written in huge black letters under it.

I am not sure. But I do know that when I went into pre term labor at 28 weeks they gave me ampicillin just incase. (i guess that is amoxicillin and penicillin together) If you told them you are allergic they CANT give it to you.

Strep can also be treated with Clindamycin. I am also allergic to penicillin, and have always been treated with Clindamycin or something similar to kill off a strep infection.

yes, just be sure to tell someone you're allergic!!! They can use amoxicillan or something else. You need to let them know, because you HAVE to have an antibiotic, it's important for the baby.
You really should tell your doctor now, it needs to be in your medical records that you're allergic. DO NOT FORGET TO LET SOMEONE KNOW!

I don't know I have never come back positive for GBS, but why on EARTH didn't you speak up?????????? They should already know your medical and allergy history, but why didn't you say something just so YOU would know what else they could do or use?

I am not sure of that but if you are afraid you should ask your
doctor to check it out for you, because this is not a safe place to seek that kind of advice . Be sure because your baby needs you to be .
