Why does the pointer of my mouse move across the screen even though the actual mouse is not moving?
It's very annoying.

Ah, its the mouse. Dirst gets onto the rollers and the Ball, and sometimes cause this peculiar movement even when the mouse is at rest.

Give the mouse a good thorough cleaning. Take out the ball, and clean it well. Then use a Scotch tape and get the accumulated dirt out from the rollers. Press the sticky surface of the tape against the dirt and lift it up off the roller.

This will likely help.

If you were using a laser mouse with no balls, then I'm at a loss ...:-)

Hi I've had this problem as well.

If you are using an optical mouse - ie one with the red light at the bottom it sometimes means that the light is interfered with.

Sometimes if you have the mouse on too shiny surface it makes the light bounce off at different angles and so interferes with your mouse.

So try using your mouse on different surfaces and see if that clears it.

Otherwise it may mean that there is dust or an hair or something in the light area and so it might be interfering with it.

If the mouse has a ball it may need cleaning.

If it zips to the same place all the time and doesn't move around it means something is wrong with your mouse, not your drivers or computer or whatever.

If optical mouse, clean off the flat bottom of the mouse, then put a strong blast of air in the hole at the bottom of the mouse. Reinstall your mouse and reload your optical mouse drivers with the CD that came with it.. Also do not use anything under your mouse that is red or has red in it, as the red light in the mouse may not see a movement when it is on red. A slightly textured mouse pad without graphics with an almost black surface maybe would be best.

See if your drivers/firmware needs updating.

Use a bettery tester to make sure your batteries are good.

If you're using a wireless mouse, this is very common if you've got a radio, cell phone, microwave, or any other piece of equipment that transmits any kind of radiation. Even remote controls

If it's NOT a wireless mouse, then you may want to try reinstalling your mouse drivers. If that doesn't fix the problem, you may have a much larger problem on your hands than you realize.

Use to happen to me, give your 4 shiny pads at the bottom of your mouse, a good clean.

If that don’t work have a look to see if you computer desk is plum use a sprit level.

Or go in to control panel, then in to mouse options, then pointer options and change the speed of your mouse.

Common problem with optical mice on a rough but slightly shiny surface (ie. a polished wood effect desk). If you really want to give an optical mouse a nervous breakdown, put it on some of that holographic reflective paper!

does it move very slowly and do you have an optical mouse?

I think it means that one of the pads on the bottom of your mouse has come off

if it zips around really quickly it is probably a virus.
