Before you ruin your glove --- Yes oil the glove, and foam shaving cream will work. But only oil the hinge area near the palm and rub it in. Work it back and forth opening and closing for about an hour while you are watching tv or doing something else. Before going to bed, oil it lightly again ONLY in the hinge area near the heel of the glove. Work it open and closed a few time again. Put a ball in it and tie it closed tight with string or rubber bands. Put it under a mattress or put something that will put weight on the hinge/heel area. Tomorrow, go to the batting cages and instead of hitting just catch the balls for about an hour.
You do not want oil or any softeners on the webbing or finger area of a first base glove, this area needs to be stiff so you can scoop balls out of the dirt. If you soften that area, ground balls will eventually just bend it back and go right through your glove. You will still need to work the heel/hinge area with your hands if you cannot close the glove tight on a ball. To check, throw a tennis ball against a wall to play catch. When you can catch the tennis ball without having it bounce out and you can squeeze it tight, the glove is broken in all the way.

Go to the store and buy a product called 'Hot Glove' or 'Glove Dr.' . There are also a number of other product out there that are similar and just as good. Basically, you pre-heat your oven to 350(direction on can) shake up can and spray all over glove paying extra attention to the pocket. 'Hot Glove' is like shaving cream and is easy to apply. After you put it in the oven for 5 mins, take out and play around with right away. I suggest using a softball to create the pocket just because it makes it bigger. It will mold to your hand and everything. Repeat process if necessary. Put a couple balls in it, wrap it up and let sit for a couple of hours and it is good to go. This stuff is awsome!

The only way that has ever worked for me is just to work it. By that I mean like, almost "massaging" it. Push down on the fingers towards your wrist, and this will break it in somewhat. Just keep on working it with your hands, and it will get broken in.
GOOD LUCK!

There is no quick way to break in a firstbasemen's mitt. I tried all of those supposed methods but they don't work so don't waste your money. I have had mine for 3 years now and I only broke mine in last week when I made my high school JV team.

i know this might sound weird but put shaving cream all over it and rub in until its all soaked in and them put a baseball inside it and tie it up tightly with somehting. the shaving cream will make it softer and so it will be easier to break it in. do this like 3 times a week and it will be easy to break in.
