I'm trying to plan a trip. I'd like to be near the ocean and I'd like to schedule some time to see the pyramid ruins.

OMG!
We had the most wonderful time in... CANCUN, if you can believe it. There is one really good gay bar, and it's just a 1 or 2 hr drive to Tulum and Coba (sorry for the spelling).
We climbed the pyramids in Tulum, walked through the forest, AMAZING. Cancun, like any tourist town in Mexico, doesn't love us-- but loves our money. Fine- I don't care.
I did find it a little hard to see the naked, hungry begging children in Coba.. but aside from the white liberal guilt...
Also-- I notice your name... my partner is Mexican, and speaks spanish... this is really important the further oyu get from the city. You HAVE to know a little Spanish at least. (I have "Suegro Spainish" , but wasn't raised with it)

Both puerto viarta y cabo san lucas have loads of gaybars and gay friendly retreats. Never been to Cancun, so I can't say, but I'd immagine those are pretty good...

No mexico has a macho culture and you may run into problems if you are too "OUT"
