In the movie title "persuit of happyness" why is the word "happiness" spelled diffrent to "happyness"?

The correct spelling of happiness IS H-A-P-P-I-N-E-S-S. You must be from Britain, I recently learned that on certain words you guys spell it one letter different or so than us (Americans) like memorize and memorise. I got into an argument with a job recruiter about how that word was spelled, he said I was wrong and I thought I was right about the spelling, but it turns out I was kind of wrong "technically" because even though I am an American I keep spelling it memorise which is the British version. American's are supposed to spell it with a "z". Whatever. I read to many British books, I think that's why.
