The heart is a bloom
Shoots up through the stony ground
There's no room
No space to rent in this town
(Theres no time or room to waste waiting on love)
You're out of luck
And the reason that you had to care
The traffic is stuck
And you're not moving anywhere
(You have nothing to lose)
You thought you'd found a friend
To take you out of this place
Someone you could lend a hand
In return for grace
(You found someone to love)
It's a beautiful day
Sky falls, you feel like
It's a beautiful day
Don't let it get away
(Self Explanatory)
You're on the road
But you've got no destination
You're in the mud
In the maze of her imagination
(You're gone but you miss your love)
You love this town
Even if that doesn't ring true
You've been all over
And it's been all over you
(This town has been good to you, even through the tough times)
It's a beautiful day
Don't let it get away
It's a beautiful day
Touch me
Take me to that other place
Teach me
I know I'm not a hopeless case
(Take a chance with me)
See the world in green and blue
See China right in front of you
See the canyons broken by cloud
See the tuna fleets clearing the sea out
See the Bedouin fires at night
See the oil fields at first light
And see the bird with a leaf in her mouth
After the flood all the colors came out
(Open up your eyes and see the beauty)
It was a beautiful day
Don't let it get away
Beautiful day
Touch me
Take me to that other place
Reach me
I know I'm not a hopeless case
What you don't have you don't need it now
What you don't know you can feel it somehow
What you don't have you don't need it now
Don't need it now
Was a beautiful day
(Everything you wanted is worthless to what you have)

The lyrics were inspired by Bono's experience with Jubilee 2000, a benefit urging politicians to drop the Third World Debt. U2 wrote this in stages. It changed drastically when Bono came up with the "Beautiful Day" lyric and the idea for the backing vocals.

It's a bit of a modern re-telling of the book of Job. Job was a decent man of God. He worked hard, lived an honest life and did what God told him to. However, Satan believed that if God removed all He had blessed Job with, then Job would curse God and walk away. So God allowed all of these horriffic things to happen to Job... he lost his family, his riches, his home and his health. He was in physical and emotional torture for years. Even his neighbors told him to "curse God and die". But Job refused to do so. Although he questioned the Lord's judgment, he always remained faithful. In the end, Job was rewarded more than he had lost.
The song is about rejoicing in the face of tragedy. Sometimes, when you lose everything, you've gained even more. It's about seeing that fraction of sunlight through the blackest of clouds. Even in the face of what this world offers today, you can still find reason to rejoice and worship in creation and life.

"According to Bono, "Beautiful Day" is about "a man who has lost everything, but finds joy in what he still has" "
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beautiful_Day
I'd start out with something like the above (qoute it) and expand on it using the lyrics to the song. So basically pick apart the lyrics and use the above source and expand on it.
Good luck :)

The song is about being stuck in the same place and not going anywhere.
It's a beautiful day, the sky falls
And you feel like it's a beautiful day
Don't let it get away.
It also is about love, and that you thought you had someone to take you out of the place your stuck in.. but then
It's a beautiful day, the sky falls
Abd you feel like it's a beautiful day
Don't let it get away
hope that helped.
