I think they are ethically obligated to report any future crimes..

Attorney-client privilege is only applicable for past crimes.

It depends on the state, and the specific rules of professional responsibility that apply.

Most states follow the ABA model, and have an exception to the privilege and confidentiality requirements for statements of future intent to commit a crime or fraud, or imminent serious bodily harm to others. Some states make reporting such future crimes or frauds optional, some make it mandatory.

For threats, this is usually grounds for an attorney to withdraw, though often the attorney must seek the court's permission. This beomes tricky in jurisdictions where the attorney is not allowed to disclose such threats because of confidentiality rules.

For non-payment, most states require that the attorney continue with the case, unless it is early enough in the proceedings that the client would not be unduly prejudiced by getting another attorney. This is one reason why many attorneys require a significant retainer up front, in case their client doesn't pay.

What would I personally do. I respect the rules of confidentiality, and absent a requirement for mandatory disclosure, I would keep it confidential. The exception would be a client who threatend me or my family. I don't like to be backed into a corner.

I'd report the client to the grammar police for confusing loose and lose.

Then I'd report him to the actual police for threatening me.

Everyone is innocent until proven guilty,so they should worry about defending them. Maybe they didnt do the crime, and know how crooked law enforcement can be. So I would look over all the evidence over and over. This case should be their number one priority.
