Ash is completely right. Babies do not need anything but a crib to sleep in, a bassinet is purely for the convenience of the parents.
Make sure that if you use a bumper pad, it is tied correctly in the crib, and if you use a mobile, make sure it is secure.

You don't NEED to have baby sleep in the bassinet at all. It is a convenience for the mother who has to get up three times a night for feedings, and that is it. You can put your little one in the crib whenever the heck you feel like it. I kept my son in the bassinet for about 5 weeks, until he started to sleep more than 5 hours at a stretch and got his night and day straightened out. He had a hard time falling asleep at night, and I actually had him falling asleep in a vibrating infant seat for the second week and half of the third... Then I got a vibrating back massager-- the infrared one that is about the size of your arm-- and stuck that into the bassinet at night. By the time the motor burned out in the thing from constant use (about 2 weeks), he had learned to self-soothe with a pacifier, so I put him in the crib.

I have two boys one is 7 and one is 3. The best time is when you feel it is right for you. I never did my boys went from the bassinet to the playpen. Don't get me wrong they both had new baby beds ready to go but I couldn't sleep with them that far away. Both of my boys loved the playpen and you can still have them close you. Just think where ever you go you can bring there bed with you. But I have many family member that all used the crib around 2 or 3 months and loved it. It's what makes you feel comfortable

Well, I guess you can put a baby in a crib from birth. I have 2 children of my own and I've always moved them to a crib around 3 or 4 months old. Thats just me I guess.I like to keep them next to me while in the bassinet. Then I move them in to the nursery.

If you think the confinement of the bassinet is awaking him, try moving him to the crib. Some babies start out sleeping in cribs just fine, while others like the close quarters of them. And it can be more convenient in those first few weeks when you have to wake to feed every couple of hours. Good luck!

You mention that your baby wakes himself up banging his arms against the sides. You can stop him waking himself with this startle reflex by swaddling him. There's a great book about it all by Dr Harvey Karp called Baby Bliss.
At 1 month old he can fit okay in a bassinet so you don't really need to move him, but you could help him sleep better.
