I'm making an address/mailbox pillar for the front of my driveway, using manufactured river rock (flat on one side). The base of my pillar is exterior plywood. Can I just screw on pieces of concrete tile board (1/2") and then mortar or thin-set my fake rock onto it? I'm trying to avoid paper, wire mess, etc.

I'd have to completely disagree with the other responder. Manufactured stone has certain construction requirements that you are bi-passing. Apply 30 lb. felt or Tyvek over the 3/4 plywood, starting at the bottom if seams are involved to allow the seams to lap over like a roof shingle. Apply the wire lath and make sure that the perforations are angled upward, not downward. Now you can apply the stone. Do it the easy way and be prepared to start from scratch for a second go around.

You can use concrete board but you should install tarpaper over the plywood first as the other guy suggested. The difference between applying the stone to mesh or concrete board is that you can apply it directly to the mesh using mortar. The process to use with the concrete board however is to apply a scratch coat of mortar to the concrete board (put about 1/2" coat of mortar on and then scratch it up well). Then when you apply the stone to the scratch coat with mortar, the stone will adhere well.

Yes certaily. Not much else needs to be said, though I wouldn't use thin set. Certainly there are exterior tile mortars that will work, as well as regular ready mix concrete.
