Well, asking is a good way to find out what you need to do. Bettas, or Siamese fighting fish need warm temperatures - at least 74o, up to 80o. If you go higher or lower, the bettas won't be very active - he'll just sit in one place all day.

They need more room than the little bowls you see them in at the pet stores - they can survive in them, but you have to clean almost every other day to keep them healthy. A small tank of 1 to 10 gallons is much better and you can watch them SWIM! Although they are capable of breathing surface air, they will appreciate a filter - just turn the flow rate down a bit - it's hard to swim against a strong current with their long fins. A larger tank size and a small filter will keep their water so you won't have to clean as often, although a 25% change each week is recommended. Just because soilds are remived by the fiilter, there is ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate that are dissolved in the water and these will build up unless you do water changes. If you use gravel in a tank of at least a gallon, beneficial bacteria will build up that will convert the ammonia and nitrite (both toxic) to nitrate, which is safer for your fish - in moderate amounts!

Feeding should be done with meaty foods - a good quality betta pellet, or frozen/thawed bloodworms. He'll eat only a few bloodworms at a time or 3-6 of the little pellets. Remove any food not eaten after 2-3 minutes.

When changing the water, a piece of airline tubing or small gravel vaccuum should be used to clean into the top portion of the gravel - this removes the solid "poop" and any organic matter accumulated before it fouls the water.

If you want to decorate the tank, live or silk plants are a better choice than plastic - plastic can snag the fins and rip them.

Calm down. Change all of the water once a week. Make sure you declorinate and the temperature is the same. Feed him every other day 4 or 5 pellets if he's a little guy, or 7 to 8 if he's a bigger fella. Little is under and inch and bigger is an like over an inch and a half to two inches. Bubbles on the side means he's building a nest. That is healthy beta behavior. They are real easy to keep. Good luck. Buy a book on betas might make you feel better.

i love beta fish! i had the same situation happen to me once with one of my betas. (the water i put him in was also too cold) i was so afraid he would die, but luckily he made it through and lived a very long life.

generally betas don't eat more than twice a day and in small portions. although its not good to over feed them, to the best of my knowledge i think this once, he will be ok. :)

the large concern for the over-feeding is the cleanliness of the tank rather than actually over-feeding the fish. none of my betas ever eat all of their food. and i've heard that they will only eat what they want anyway.

if you are looking for care tips for betas here are a few links i found that i hope will help you out! good luck to you and your beta!
