Calcium is not naturally found in its elemental state. Calcium occurs most commonly in sedimentary rocks in the minerals calcite, dolomite and gypsum. It occurs in igneous and metamorphic rocks chiefly in the silicate minerals: plagioclase, amphiboles, pyroxenes and garnets.

It occurs in many biological systems (in our bones and teeth) in compound form.

It is a group II metal and tends to make ionic bonds with non-metals.

It is most common as a compound and relatively uncommon as an element.

Calcium (Latin calx, meaning "limestone") was known as early as the first century when the Ancient Romans prepared lime as calcium oxide. It was not actually isolated until 1808 in England when Sir Humphry Davy electrolyzed a mixture of lime and mercuric oxide.

Like other group II metals, it reacts with water to form a hydroxide and liberate hydrogen, it prefers to lose 2 valence (outer shell) electrons in its reactions ...
