when i say 'fine, how are you?' it is generally depends on the tone of voice i am saying it in.

If i say it just in an everyday tone then it is generally 'I'm OK, but nothing special, how about you?'

If i say it in upbeat tone then its 'I'm great, how about you?'

if i say it in a downbeat tone then its generally 'I'm feeling like ****, what about you?'

Having said that i am going to try my best not to use the tone of my voice to express how i feel all the time as there are alot of people who do not understand what i am saying, so i really should articulate more, however saying that, i generally use the word fine if i can't really be bothered to talk to the person.

Hope this helps. x x

i mean I'm feeling like **** and i want to go and get into bed and stay there for 3 days and eat infinite amounts of chocolate but i'm not going to tell u that coz it's my problem or i don't know u well enough so i'll deflect the question and ask you how you are back.

You generally mean 'How are you?' and 'I'm fine'.
What the hell else do you think it could mean?
I know, you sat there thinking "Now what question can I ask" Then when you simply could not think of anything else, you asked the above. Am I right, or am I right?

It generally means that I don't want to talk about myself, so it's a way of deflecting the question.

i usually say 'fine, how are you?' because i know full well that the person who i'm talking to has no desire to hear about my sh*tty day ! it's just one of those funny English eccentricities, like talking about the weather all the time...

its just like an automatic response to be polite- very rarely i'll lauch into how i really am cos most of the time people only ask how you are out of politeness anyway

It's just a polite way to respond. The person doesn't really care how you are ;)
