Hey, you're reading and asking questions, that's a great thing. Bettas aren't all that hard to keep as long as you keep a few basics in mind.

1. Keep him fairly warm. Anything from 70 - 90 is good for a betta, they can go with a wide range and be just fine.

2. If you have a tank, filter it. If not and you keepp him in a bowl, then change all of his water every 2-3 days to keep it clean.

3. Don't over feed. Feed him only as much as he can eat in 3-4 minutes twice a day. If there is leftovers get that out so it doesn't foul the water.

Do these and you are well on the way to sucess.

Okay, don't panic, you'll be fine. It's great that you are interested in making sure that you take care of your betta properly and that's the most important thing! Keep him in at least a 1 gallon tank, preferably around 2.5 gallons, with a heater, a thermometer and a filter. When you do your 25% weekly water changes, check the thermometer to see what the temperature is before you remove the water. It should be kept between 78-82 degrees F. Rinse the filter in the old water you removed from the tank. When you are preparing the new water, use a mixture of hot and cold water and test it with the thermometer and get it at the same temperature that your tank is at. Then add some Amquel to remove the chlorine, chloramine, and help with the ammonia level. Make sure you vacuum or siphon the gravel to remove the gunk that collects on the bottom. They sell these at the store, but you can even use a simple turkey baster to do this. Make sure you have a master test kit and learn how to test the water so you are sure you have healthy water. Feed as we have described before and you should be fine. Good luck!
