I think the saddest characters are both Edward and Alphonse Elric from Full metal Alchemist. Edward and Alphonse Elric were children living in the rural village of Risembool in the country of Amestris. Their father, a talented alchemist, had left home when Edward was very young and Alphonse was still an infant. Years later, their mother, Trisha Elric, died of a terminal illness. After their mother's death, the two boys decided to attempt to revive their deceased mother using alchemy; human transmutation. They studied alchemy with a teacher and then used their father's books and notes that he had left behind to recreate a human transmutation circle. However, this attempt failed, resulting in a twisted mass of flesh and bone at the cost of Edward's left leg and Alphonse's entire body. In a desperate effort to save his brother, Edward sacrificed his right arm to affix his brother's soul to a suit of armor. After that, Edward's left leg and right arm are fitted with two sets of Automail, a type of advanced prosthetic limb. In the original Japanese, the term "Fullmetal" is used to describe a person who is stubborn. In the series it is often mistakenly attributed by minor characters to Ed's automail arm and leg, or Al's armor body.
Alphonse even when he speaks makes my heart break.

I think the saddest character I've ever seen is Kira, from Gundam Seed and Gundam Seed Destiny.

He is known to be the "Ultimate Coordinator" and was created by genetic engineering, being a success. Because of many trials and mistakes, there have been other "human experiments" that have suffered because of him.

Since he is a Coordinator, he is capable of many things. He has to fight in the Mobile Suits (in this series), and fight his child hood friend, Athrun (Gundam Seed). He has to fight in order to protect his friends, and even later on, he can't protect them.

Innocent people die because he can't protect them, as well as his friends that he can't protect. He has to make the decisions to use his power for the greater good, but what is "good"?

Death and suffering is what Kira has to face, and that is why I think he is the saddest anime character I have ever watched. He doesn't like to hurt others and doesn't want others to die or suffer, but what else can he do?

I just think he's the saddest character...

[I do agree with Gaara, Naruto, and Shuji from Saikano as well, but Kira beats them in my view]

Yeah I have to agree Gaara. I wanted to cry for him, but it gets better on later, when he decided to take Naruto's advice.

SPOILER WARNING!!

For me 4 chracters from Kimi ga Nozomu Eien (Rumbling Hearts). Takayumi, Haruka, Mitsuki and Akane.

Haruka because she had been through an accident that cause her to be in a coma for 3 years and throughout these years taka (her lover) "betrayed" her by having a sexual relationship with Mitsuki (Haruka's best friend since high school)

Mitsuki because she has been lost and wandering around throughout her life, she gives up without giving another shoot, gets into a sexual relationship with Taka even though his heart is toward Haruka and she feels second to Haruka in Taka's eyes once Haruka wakes up from the coma.

Akane (sis of Haruka and friends of taka and mitsuki) because she is caught in the middle of the love triangle, hates taka and mitsuki after her sis gets into a coma as they don't visit her after some time and the sexual relationship between them.

Taka because he is just too soft on anyone he meets to the extent that his life becomes topsy turvy, is caught in a love triangle and HE LEAVES THE GIRL (Haruka) HE LOVED SO MUCH SINCE HIGH SCHOOL FOR MITSUKI...Bohoho...I cried.

All in all at least each charater has someone to be with at the end...watch of you must as it taught me many things about life.

i would have to say Gaara too.
even though Naruto was just like him once, all alone, now Naruto has friends and people who care about him, Gaara is still all alone and won't let anybody in.
